Basically, the goal of Poker is to create the best poker hand you can. A poker hand is composed of five cards, which are usually ranked from Ace to ten. The highest hand wins the pot. The pot is a collection of all bets made by all players during a single deal.
Poker is played by a group of people around an oval table. Each player is dealt a hand of cards, one at a time. These cards are usually dealt face up, though some poker games have jokers. The cards are ranked from ace to ten, with aces being the highest.
The first round of betting begins with antes and blinds. The ante is an amount that each player has to put in the pot. In this round, the player who receives the jack is the first dealer.
The next round begins with two dealers. Each player must “call” the first bet. The next player to the left is then required to “raise” the bet. If he folds, he is said to “fold”. This action removes any chips from the pot. The player to the left is required to put in the same number of chips as the player who folded. Then, the dealer is responsible for dealing the next card in the round.
The dealer’s button is a white plastic disk. This button varies in color, but the one on the left is usually the highest denomination chip. In Poker, the button on the left is often referred to as the “buck”.
The dealer’s button is also the indicator of the right to deal a poker hand. The dealer’s button is marked with the name of the nominal dealer. The dealer is not usually the player who makes the initial bet.
The dealer is responsible for cutting the deck and assembling the cards. He or she is also the first to shuffle the deck. The next player to the left is then responsible for the next round of betting.
A “showdown” occurs after the last round of betting. The showdown is when all of the cards are revealed and the player with the best poker hand is deemed the winner. The high card may break ties if more than one player has a pair of the same type. It may also break ties if several players have high hands of the same type. If two identical poker hands are played, each winner is divided equally.
A “worst” hand is a hand that does not qualify for the pot. It could be a hand that does not have any ties, or it could be a hand that is not worth betting on. A pair of kings is not a bad hand off the deal. But a pair of aces is probably not.
Some games have a special feature, such as wild cards, which can be used to make five of a kind. Wild cards are usually added to the standard 52-card pack.
